TRAUMA THERAPY
"Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as soon as you touch a human soul be just another human soul."

DRA. JANAÍRA ENGER
I am a trauma therapist and medical doctor with 25 years of experience working with gastroenterology, digestive endoscopy and psychosomatic illnesses.

Throughout my career, several of my patients with gastric disorders presented physical symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic syndrome.
Usually, in traditional medicine, the body is seen and treated with a pragmatic approach devoid of connection with the mental health of the patient. Therefore, I decided to acquire more knowledge and new tools, through a solid formation, to fully connect body and mind.

Trauma happens when one experiences a dangerous and/or overwhelming situation and feels vulnerable, frightened, and without any possibility of self-defence or escape.

Trauma may begin as acute stress from a perceived life-threatening situation or as the result of cumulative stress. Both forms of stress can seriously impair one’s ability to function with resilience and ease.

Trauma may result from a wide variety of stressors such as accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss and birth trauma.
My work consists in treating trauma using Somatic Experiencing and Soma Embodiment, by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance to difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions.
Clients will receive support, be seen and heard with respect as well as compassion, to develop a unique process towards
their healing.
This process can be complemented by the use of Image and Symbol Pedagogy to help unveil feelings that may appear
along the way.
My goal is to offer an environment where the client can feel safe and welcome to regain the quality of their emotional and physical life and move forward with their life’s journey.
01.
The Somatic Experiencing® method, developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. The SE™ approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.

The SE offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states.

The Somatic Experiencing® facilitates the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms.
02.
Conceived and developed by Sonia Gomes, PhD, SOMA-Embodiment offers diagnostic skills, touch and movement tools, and haptic awakening to transform emotional, developmental and shock trauma.
03.
Throughout history, we have always expressed our experiences and emotions with images and symbols. These are fundamental tools to access
the unconscious.

Through a set of guided exercises, we analyse the personal meaning of different imagery, bringing to light valuable treasures from the unconscious, which can help us understand, manage and find purpose in life.
